Skillinge

Skillinge can be discovered through its maritime history, a traditional swimming pier and a diverse cultural offering. Those who choose the village for a stay will find different points of interest: coastal experiences south of the village, reminders of fishing and seafaring, as well as theatre, music and literature are presented as clearly distinct themes.

Swimming pier south of Skillinge

The Skillinge swimming pier, Skillinge badbrygga, is located south of Skillinge. It has barbecue areas, an outdoor fitness trail and an outdoor gym. This waterfront location therefore combines several documented uses, without limiting a visit to swimming. The badbrygga also has a long history as a local meeting place. For many years, it served generations of Skillinge residents as a place for swimming lessons. This historical function is just as much part of the swimming pier’s significance as its present-day facilities.

Fishing village and seafaring history

Skillinge is very well preserved as a fishing village and still clearly bears the character of fishing and seafaring. This maritime connection is particularly tangible in the two-masted schooner Klara Marie: its home port is in Skillinge. The ship was built in 1884 in Rønne on Bornholm.

A deeper perspective is offered by the “Skillinge förr och nu” collection at the Skillinge Maritime Museum. Its two-part model shows parts of Skillinge in 2020 and 1810. The collection also includes the local “sträddena” passages. The comparison over time makes the transformation of the village visible within the exhibition and complements the more ship-focused history of Klara Marie with a depiction of Skillinge itself.

Theatre, events and chapel

Skillinge Teater organises self-produced theatre performances, concerts, literary events and design markets. The spatial facilities are also described as part of the cultural overview: the theatre has three stages, a café, a restaurant and an organic wine bar. The premises cover more than 1,000 m². The theatre is therefore characterised not only by a single type of event, but by several cultural formats and different areas under one name.

Another regular option is offered by Skillinge kapell. Every Thursday at 9 a.m., a lay-led morning prayer takes place there. Afterwards, simple coffee or tea is served at Kapellgården. This offering differs clearly from the theatre programme in both time and format, and complements the cultural impressions with a recurring morning appointment.

Connections to Simrishamn

A bus connection and a bicycle route are documented for getting between Skillinge and Simrishamn. The bus journey between the two places takes 27 minutes. From Skillinge, a 11.8 km cycling route also leads to Simrishamn railway station along the scenic coast; the journey takes approximately 36 minutes. The word “approximately” remains important here. The two connections therefore differ primarily in their mode of transport and their respective route or destination.

If you would like to compare Skillinge with other destinations in the same selection, you can also find Gärsnäs, Gladsax, Tommarp, Hammenhög, Sankt Olof, Vik, Brantevik and Kivik.
