Discover Culture, Parks and Nature in Tomelilla

Tomelilla combines culture in the urban area with green recreational spaces and nature reserves. Here, you can choose between a varied cultural programme, historical traces, walks in the centre and nature experiences in the surrounding area.

Culture and Local History in Tomelilla

Kulturhuset in Tomelilla offers a varied programme of lectures, theatre performances and music evenings. All public areas of Kulturhuset are accessible, for example, by lift. Tomelilla konsthall provides a distinctive feature: it was built in 1965 and was one of the first rural art galleries in Sweden.

The GPS-guided Tomelillarundan provides further insights into local history. Using buildings, works of art and locations, the route in the Shuttle app tells the story of the history, development and present day of the Tomelilla urban area. The Shuttle app can be downloaded free of charge. In public spaces, you will encounter, among other things, the statue Artemis, donated by Carl Milles, in the market square and the sculpture Den onämnbare at the entrance to the town hall. Peter Tillberg created it in 1982; it is approximately four metres high.

The market is also part of the town’s history: it is an old tradition that has existed since 1871. The historical document plan öfver Tomelilla by Knut Esbjörn Österlin from 1892 shows various businesses and buildings in Tomelilla. These include the former new hotel building of innkeeper Jeppsson on the market square, the post office and today’s railway station.

Parks and Natural Areas

For a stay in the town centre, Stadsparken is located right in Tomelilla. More than 200 trees grow there, and there is a pond in the northern section. Since the 1920s, the park has been a popular place for walks and a meeting place on public holidays. Skogsbacken med Väladalen, a municipal nature reserve, is also located in the immediate vicinity of the urban area.

If you would like to include another natural area, the Kronoskogen nature reserve is located in Tomelilla Municipality a few kilometres outside Tomelilla. It borders the Tosselilla amusement park and the Svampabanan racetrack and offers good opportunities for recreation. Thus, different landscapes are available both within and outside the urban area, without implying that their locations are the same.

Swimming, Exercise and Open Activities

Österlenbadet offers a 25-metre pool, a children’s pool, a combined pool with warmer water, a whirlpool, a dry sauna, a steam sauna and a cold-water bath. The facilities also include swimming lessons, early-morning swimming, regular water aerobics and Hydrohex water aerobics with video instructions.

At Aktivitetsparken, you will find a skate park and an outdoor table tennis table. You can play tennis or basketball there free of charge at any time without making a reservation. The outdoor gym at Kastanjeskolan is located between an artificial-turf field and the Hiet woodland. In addition, the jazz archive preserves a personal collection of swing and big-band jazz, focusing on American jazz from 1940 to 1960. The jazz archive’s programme evenings are open to everyone.
