Torekov – Beach, Harbor and Maritime History

Torekov can be discovered through three closely interconnected travel interests: a fishing village with a distinctive character, a harbor environment with maritime history, and several coastal and nature experiences.

Fishing Village, Harbor and Local History

Torekov has well-preserved buildings from the 19th century. The unusually straight street network for a fishing village is also part of the character of the place: it was laid out after the great fire. Section 18 of the Skåneleden trail leads into the fishing village and past 19th-century buildings and fishermen’s huts. The harbor area, with its pier, fishermen’s huts and boat storage area, is an important part of Torekov. Torekovs Sjöfartsmuseum is located in the harbor on the slope toward the sea and Hallands Väderö. At the museum are the stern of the schooner Fram av Brantevik and a cabin from the sailing ship Hoppet av Länna. In this way, the harbor complements the historic character of the town with tangible evidence of seafaring. The church is also part of the local history. Today’s Torekov Church was built between 1860 and 1863 according to plans by architect Johan Adolf Hawerman. After an infestation of house longhorn beetles, it was renovated between 1950 and 1953. Inside is a brass baptismal font from 1648.

Sandy Beach and Bathing Areas

Those who want to experience the coast through sandy beaches and water will find various beach sections in Torekov. Morgonbryggan has a 150-meter-long sandy beach interspersed with stones and small skerries. The bathing area is shallow and has a sandy bottom; there is also a bathing jetty. Morgonbryggan has existed since the 19th century. After the Christmas storm of 1902 destroyed the bridge and the large breakwater, there was an interruption. Torekovs strand is an approximately 600-meter-long sandy beach next to the parking area at Torekov harbor. This beach is also shallow and has a sandy bottom. Grassy sand dunes lie above the 20- to 30-meter-wide strip of beach. Bathing jetties, toilets, a dog beach and winter bathing steps are among the explicitly stated features. There is also a clear rule for bathing with dogs at Bläsingestranden: it is permitted there year-round.

Island, Forest and Seal Watching

The approximately 3-kilometer-long island of Hallands Väderö lies off the coast of Torekov. Several hiking trails run across the island. Strandskogen offers a different landscape impression and consists mostly of pine forest. The trees were planted at the end of the 19th century to bind the sand. Seal safaris depart from Torekov harbor, offering opportunities to observe seals. Those who want to place the surroundings within a longer route can also consider the Ängelholm–Båstad section of the Kattegattleden trail. It leads to Killebäckstorp in the direction of picturesque Torekov.
