Tygelsjö – Church, Meadows and History

Church and Historical Details

Tygelsjö kyrka was built in the neo-Gothic style and inaugurated in 1905. The church's baptismal font comes from the medieval church dating from the 12th century. Thus, the same place of worship brings together a building from the early 20th century and a preserved furnishing with a connection to the Middle Ages. Those interested in church architecture can therefore consider both the neo-Gothic style and the baptismal font's older origins.

Tygelsjö kyrkogård features a cast-iron fence that partially surrounds the cemetery. This detail forms part of the cemetery's exterior design without enclosing it completely. Tygelsjö kyrka also holds a morning service every Wednesday at 09:00. This fixed appointment anchors church life on a specific day of the week and complements the historical features with a current religious offering.

Tygelsjö ängar: Nature and Seasonal Rules

Tygelsjö ängar offer opportunities for birdwatching. From 1 April to 15 July, Tygelsjö ängar may not be entered; however, along two designated paths, it is permitted to walk towards the sea. During this period, the prohibition on entering the meadows and the exception for the two paths must be observed separately. Permitted movement is restricted to the explicitly designated routes towards the sea and does not constitute general access to the meadow area. The nature experience during this period therefore clearly differs between birdwatching in the area and the permitted section of path.

In 2017, 250 stems of Ormax were recorded at Tygelsjö ängar; this was the third-largest population in the survey.

Local History and Orientation

The founding phase of the regulated settlement of Tygelsjö is dated to the period from the middle of the 11th century to the following century. This date refers to the settlement's founding phase and not to the construction year of the present-day church. The settlement's history therefore begins in a period preceding the 12th century and extends into the century from which the baptismal font originates. Together with the church inaugurated in 1905, this creates a chronological sequence of an early settlement foundation, a medieval connection to the church and a neo-Gothic church building.
