Vik: Coast, Trails and Fishing Village History

Vik lies on a narrow strip of beach below high sand dunes and is surrounded by orchards. The village thus combines a distinctive coastal landscape with trails leading inland, a long fishing village history and various opportunities for active or cultural days. Hiking between the coast and the inland areas

Stage 5 of the Skåneleden trail passes through Vik. At Vik, the Skåneleden turns inland and leads past hills and cultivated land. The Skåneleden hike from Vik to Simrishamn offers a different type of route: it follows a coastal path along beaches, small trails and a cycle path. This means that the surrounding area offers both sections with views of the open coastal landscape and stretches through scenery shaped by hills and cultivated areas.

For a day at the beach, the beach at Viks Fiskeläge lies south of Vik. It is several hundred metres long and consists of fine sand. Prästens badkar, a unique rose-shaped rock formation on the cliffs, is also located on the coast south of Vik. There are 20 parking spaces at Prästens badkar. Afrodite Hamnkiosk is situated along the Linnéleden hiking trail and offers a beautiful view of Stenshuvud. Surfing is also available in Vik.

Vik as a historic place

Vik was a combination of a fishing village and a farming village and is considered the oldest of Österlen's seven fishing villages. Viks Fiskeläge is mentioned in written sources dating from 1613. The preserved area of the Vik settlement was not washed away by the sea and lies above the highest shoreline.

The history of the village goes back even further: During the final phase of the Hunter Stone Age, a group of people lived on a hill in what is now Vik. Anyone interested in the development of the village will therefore find several historical layers – from the Hunter Stone Age and the written mention of Viks Fiskeläge to the connection between fishing and farming.

Art and golf as additional highlights

In the area around Vik, Tjörnedala has been known as an art centre since the 1990s. Östra Skånes Konstnärsgille, or ÖSKG for short, operates there with an art gallery, a café and a shop. For travel plans with a cultural focus, this place complements Vik's historical and natural features with contemporary art.

Golf is also part of the area's history and present-day landscape. Lilla Vik is a classic, green parkland golf course; many of its holes run along the Baltic Sea coast. Golf was already being played on Vik's beach meadows before Österlens Golf Club was founded in 1945.
