Masku: Beaches, Roses and Historic Sites
Accommodation in Masku
Those planning a trip that combines swimming, garden visits and culture will find a variety of options in Masku. These include Isonkiven uimaranta, a public beach; Masku Rosarium; and historic sites in Masku and the associated municipality. The attractions appeal to different interests and can be considered destinations in their own right.
Swimming on the Masku Riviera
Isonkiven uimaranta is the most popular of the gravel-pit lake beaches on the Masku Riviera and is a public beach. If you plan to focus your stay on swimming, you can consider this beach as a specific starting point when looking for a suitable place in Masku. Its classification as a gravel-pit lake beach is part of what characterizes the local swimming options.
The Kareva circular trail starts at the Masku Riviera on Ruskontie. In summer, it offers opportunities to swim in the gravel-pit lake and take a coffee break. This seasonal option combines a walk on a circular trail with opportunities for a swim and a rest break. If this combination appeals to you, summer is a suitable time to plan a visit.
Roses and gardens
Masku Rosarium has more than 400 roses and around 250 varieties, with explanatory signs throughout the garden. Its wide range of varieties makes the rosarium a destination in its own right for visitors interested in roses and garden culture. Rest areas and scenic viewpoints round out the visit. Along with the plants, places to relax and views are among the rosarium’s features.
In the associated municipality, the grounds of Louhisaari Manor offer a different kind of garden: they include a kitchen garden inspired by the 18th century, an orchard and a large English-style park with a pavilion. If you would like to compare gardens, you will find, alongside the rosarium, gardens whose design explicitly reflects different traditions.
History and culture
At Louhisaari Manor, visitors can explore interiors dating from the 17th and 18th centuries and learn about the lives of the Fleming and Mannerheim families, who owned the estate. Louhisaaren kartanolinna in Askainen is a rare example of palace architecture in Finland. Together, these two aspects give the visit a historical focus: the interiors and family history complement the estate’s architectural significance.
Masku Church is one of Masku’s three historic stone churches and is part of Finland’s cultural heritage. In the associated municipality, Kemppien tupa, a local history museum, is next to Lemu’s medieval church. Upstairs at Kemppien tupa, visitors can learn about what attending school was like in the past. Masku Museum is open in summer, and admission is free. These sites offer different ways to explore local history and culture, from church architecture and a local history museum to a museum that opens seasonally.
Ritaripuisto in Askainen is also a memorial site: established in 2007 near Askainen Church, it commemorates those who died in war. Its connection to a specific year and purpose sets it apart from the historic interiors and museums.
Nature watching and trails
Nature lovers will find several different destinations in the municipality. At the Lemun Kaidanpää bird tower, there is a parking area, a signposted approach and nature information boards. Oukkulanlahti bird tower is considered an excellent birdwatching spot in Masku. You can choose between a tower with nature information boards and a destination specifically recommended for birdwatching.
Kolkanpolku’s outdoor trails consist of three separate routes. This is important when choosing which trail to take: Kolkanpolku is not one continuous trail, but comprises three separate routes. The Oukkulanlahti trail also has a section with a boardwalk. If you include nature destinations in your trip, you will find both a choice of different routes and a trail with a specifically noted structural feature.
