Somero offers several starting points for planning a trip: historic buildings and exhibitions, cultural trails, and routes for outdoor activities. Those who want to include culture and exercise in their stay can compare the options by theme and route length. Some practical details, such as trail distances and parking at Kohnamäen-Kai, help with getting your bearings.

Culture and history in Somero

Someron Torppamuseo is in the town centre on the historic Hämeen Härkätie. The museum consists of thirteen buildings from the 18th and 19th centuries. Between 1955 and 1964, they were moved to the museum grounds from Somero and the surrounding municipalities. Both the buildings’ origins and their assembly into a collection are part of the site’s history. Visitors interested in historic buildings can explore structures from different places of origin and learn when they were relocated.

Two different themes take centre stage at Someron Kulttuurigalleria, in Aholan talo next to the town hall. A permanent Aarikka exhibition presents Kaija Aarikka’s work since 1954. There is also a permanent heritage room for Somero’s veterans and war invalids. It contains materials and objects donated by Somero residents. Both exhibitions are in the same gallery, but focus on different aspects of culture and remembrance.

Someron Kulttuuripolku adds ten different walking and cycling routes to these places. Alongside the exhibitions, there is also a route project with a cultural focus. Those who want to get to know Somero beyond individual buildings and gallery spaces can include these trails in their trip plans. The ten routes offer a selection; their respective distances and themes are useful when comparing them with other activities in the area.

Routes and outdoor activities

Kohnamäen-Kai is a recreational area established by the City of Somero and is free for everyone to use. It is situated along a gravel recreational trail from Kyyräntie to the Härkälä footbridge. It is about 250 metres on foot from Kyyräntie. There is no parking nearby; vehicles can be left, for example, on Kyyräntie. Those planning to travel by car should also take this short walk into account when finding their way.

The Esakallio-Hovimäki fitness trail is about eight kilometres long, follows forest paths and has easy terrain. In winter, a cross-country ski trail runs along the route. The Metsäkoivulan trail offers a different distance: this nature trail is about four kilometres long, lies on land owned by the City of Somero, and is near Hämeen Härkätie. At around four kilometres, it is about half the length of the Esakallio-Hovimäki fitness trail. This makes it possible to compare route lengths; forest paths and easy terrain are specifically described for the longer route.

At Pontikkapuro, there is a covered campfire site along the Metsäkoivula route. Visitors can take a break there, eat and make coffee over the fire. Climbers have marked climbing routes on the rock face known as Nakkivuori along the route; their condition may vary. The campfire site and marked climbing routes add different ways to spend time along the nature trail.

Another activity is offered by Somero DiscGolfPark, with 18 holes near the Rankkula fitness trail. So, in addition to cultural activities and the routes described, Somero also offers disc golf and, in winter, cross-country skiing on the Esakallio-Hovimäki route. The different themes and route lengths offer practical ways to plan a stay around your interests.
