Pargas brings together the island world of the Archipelago with nature trails and historic cultural sites. If you want to choose between spending time in nature and focusing on history during your trip, you’ll find a range of options here: trails through rocky terrain, bogs and heathland sit alongside a historic wooden town, a medieval church and museums.

Nature Trails and Varied Landscapes

At least 29 endangered species have been recorded in the Lenholmen Nature Reserve. The area is therefore notable as a natural environment whose importance also lies in the diversity of the species recorded there. For your own walking experience, the Mustikkapolku near Lemlahti offers a different perspective: blue markings and arrows indicate the trail, which passes through varied terrain with open rocky sections and bogland.

The Liljapolku on Lillholmen is about 1.3 kilometres long and lies approximately 4 kilometres from the centre of Pargas. These two distances describe different aspects: the length of the nature trail and its location relative to the centre. The Puolukkapolku is also 1.3 kilometres long, runs mostly through dry heathland and has considerable elevation changes. When choosing a trail, you can therefore take into account its length and the terrain described for it, without assuming that the two routes share the same characteristics.

In the municipality, the Sattmark nature trail network offers blue-marked routes of 2.5, 5.5 and 11 kilometres; some sections pass through difficult terrain. The first section of the Sattmark Trail is a 2.5-kilometre Robinson adventure trail for children. When choosing between the routes, both their different lengths and the terrain features specifically mentioned are therefore relevant. Sattmark also has a summer café where freshly smoked fish can be purchased.

Wooden Town, Church and Museums

Vanha Malmi is the historic centre of Pargas, an old trading place and a well-preserved wooden town. Its lanes feature small 18th-century houses as well as imposing urban buildings from the 19th century. Together with the medieval church, Vanha Malmi forms a nationally significant cultural landscape and heritage ensemble. Pargas Church is one of more than seventy medieval grey-stone churches in Finland; its first written mention dates from 6 June 1329.

The Pargas Local History Museum comprises around ten buildings that illustrate the history of the area across several centuries. Visitors can see a sailor’s croft, a tenant farmer’s cottage, a former classroom and residential interiors from the 1920s and 1940s. The museum grounds are also home to Kirjala Norrgård, known for its Lenin Room. The museum thus highlights both buildings with different historical functions and living spaces from two specifically named decades.

The Pargas Industrial Museum provides information about the local operations of Paraisten Kalkkivuori osakeyhtiö. Its permanent geological exhibition includes “2,000 Million Years,” about the long history of limestone, which is important to the region. The museum grounds also offer a view of the open-pit mine. A visit therefore brings together company history, geology and a view of the mining site, while keeping these topics distinct.

Archipelago and Routes for Different Ways of Travelling

The Pargas Archipelago comprises more than 10,000 islands and six vibrant places to explore. The Archipelago Trail can be explored by bicycle, car, boat or on foot. The Pargas–Nagu section is 35 kilometres long and includes a 10-minute ferry crossing, with up to four departures per hour. These details give you specific information about this section, while the modes of transport listed describe different ways to explore it.

Within the municipality, Seili can be reached only by water. On the island, a 1.7-kilometre nature trail passes through lush groves, cultural landscapes and coastal rocks. Visitors can also tour the Seili Museum Church. The water route is therefore an essential consideration if you are planning to include Seili in your trip; the island combines a nature trail with a museum church.

Other destinations at the same higher level include Somero, Koski, Lieto, Harjattula, Uro, Västanfjärd, Härkälä and Dragsfjärd.
