Egeskov Church and its Architectural History

Egeskov Church is a Romanesque village church with a nave and chancel dating from the middle of the 12th century. However, its present appearance encompasses several construction phases: The tower and porch are Late Gothic additions, built several centuries after the Romanesque nave and chancel. The east gable of the chancel is particularly rich in detail. It is decorated with three broad, round-arched blind arcades, which are divided at the top by paired round arches. This makes it possible to trace the development of the building through individual sections without confusing the Romanesque core with the later additions.

The interior and surroundings of the church also offer distinct historical points of interest. The Romanesque baptismal font is the oldest item in Egeskov Church’s furnishings. Den Bruunske Tepavillon was built at the western end of the churchyard in 1804. Egeskov Churchyard also contains a burial site dating from around 1800, with a classically designed tea pavilion. This creates a place where sacred architecture, older furnishings and later design elements can be viewed within a manageable setting.

Water, Birdlife and Paths

The Egeskov Trampesti runs below the church and leads close to the water and the birdlife along Rands Fjord. The trail thus offers its own way to experience the transition between the churchyard and the fjord.
