Sjølund: Skamlingsbanken, Hiking Trails and History
If you would like to combine nature and history on your trip, look towards Skamlingsbanken in the area around Sjølund. It is Southern Jutland’s highest point and a protected area. Active Experiences in Sjølund
There are several different activities in Sjølund for active days. Sjølund Disc Golf Course has nine baskets and is open to everyone on weekends and on weekdays outside school and SFO hours: Mondays to Thursdays after 5 p.m. and Fridays after 4 p.m. The outdoor fitness facilities allow you to train using your own body weight as well as resistance training with magnetic weights. The Madpakkehus at Sjølund-Hejls School can also be used by visitors outside the usual school hours. Sjølund Multiarena can be rented by private individuals and companies.
Skamlingsbanken Between Views and Interpretation
The Skamlingsbanken Visitor Centre in the area around Sjølund presents the four forces of nature, place, speech and assembly through a digital story. The building is built into the hillside and has a large window overlooking the Little Belt. At the visitor centre, Café Skau serves light meals, refreshments, coffee and cake. Skamlingsbanken Restaurant is located 150 metres from the Skamlingsbanken visitor site and serves food and drinks.
Hiking Trails, Landscape and Danish History
Skamlingsbanken is located in the area around Sjølund and was an important meeting place in Danish history. The Højskamling hiking route is 1.5 km long and passes five information stations providing information about the history, landscape and nature of Skamlingsbanken. The Picnic-cirkel at Skamlingsbanken invites you to take a picnic break, play and learn about how glaciers shaped the landscape 18,000 years ago. The path from the car park to Picnic-cirklen follows a firm gravel path and is easily accessible.
Nature and Historical Traces
Skamlingsbanken was shaped by a glacier during the last Ice Age and has rich and diverse nature, with large open grazing areas and nutrient-poor grasslands. Sjølund itself also bears traces of history: The Sjølund Mølle feed mill dates from 1868 and was rebuilt in 1963 after a fire. Vejstrup Church is located in Sjølund. From 1911 to 1948, Sjølund was a station on the Kolding Sydbaner railway line between Kolding and Hejlsminde.
