Discover Randbøl: Heathland, Trails and History

Heathland with a distinctive origin

Randbøl Hede is one of Denmark’s largest inland heathlands. It originated from fine sand deposited there by meltwater flowing westward through the tunnel valley near Vejle. The Syvårssøerne are also among the area’s changeable natural features: they are not always present and fill up in years with abundant precipitation.

A prominent landmark is Stoltenbjerg. It forms the highest point of a sand dune ridge running from east to west, rising 17 metres above the flat heathland. Stoltenbjerg offers views across Randbøl Hede. This viewpoint can only be reached on foot via sandy paths – an important point to bear in mind when planning a hike.

Hiking, Horse Riding and Nature Observation

For longer hikes, the 13-kilometre section of Hærvejen from Haraldskær to Bindeballe passes through Randbøl Hede and Frederikshåb Plantage. In addition, there are three marked hiking trails each in Randbøl Hede and Frederikshåb Plantage. Three trails begin at Naturrum Kirstinelyst and lead directly onto Randbøl Hede.

Naturrum Kirstinelyst at Randbøl Hede combines an exhibition with an outdoor kitchen, shelters, facilities for riders and an observation tower for birdwatching. Riders can follow a route of just over 10 km that runs entirely around Randbøl Hede. The 13 kilometres of the Hærvejen section and the slightly more than 10 kilometres of the riding route provide a concrete framework for planning a day on either route.

Industrial History and Older Cultural Traces

At Randbøldalmuseet, the permanent exhibition explores the history of industrial production in Randbøldal from 1732 to 1983. During events, visitors can try traditional weaving and papermaking crafts, as well as historical techniques for lifting water. Randbøl Kirke is a medieval church dating from around 1150. It is centrally located on Hærvejen and near a burial mound from the Late Stone Age or Early Bronze Age known as “Kong Rans Høj”.
