Odderbæk: Wetland and Wildlife

The 140-hectare wetland near Odderbæk was created in 2012; along a 3-kilometre stretch, the Odderbæk was restored to a meandering course. Characteristic birds for wildlife observation include lapwings, green woodpeckers, kestrels and kingfishers. The otter, which had been absent from the area for 50 years, has returned to the Odderbæk area. The landscape and wildlife thus give the stay two closely connected but distinct perspectives.

The Odderbæk hiking route has an alternative starting point in Vesterlund: 25 m south of Sejrupvej 2, at the corner of Sejrupvej and Tinnetvej. There are several parking spaces and a shelter for breaks and meals. The Sporet i Odderbæk-området trail network connects the three localities of Thyregod, Vesterlund and Sejrup. The alternative starting point connects the specific route location in Vesterlund with the trail network via Thyregod and Sejrup.

In the nearby Rørbæk Sø source area, there are around 50 km of marked hiking trails and 12 different hikes. Southwest of the source area, the trails lie in the Odderbæk area.

The Kulsø Spejdercenter near Vesterlund adds another facet of nature. Its grounds cover approximately 27 hectares of varied nature, forest, marshland and lakes. Overnight guests at Kulsø Spejdercenter can rent 10 to 11 canoes and use them on Nedersø and Kulsø. The canoes and the two lakes provide a different focus from the trails explored on foot.

Culture and History in Vesterlund

Near Vesterlund in Jutland is a Bronze Age burial mound that was investigated in 1908. Vesterlund Efterskole was founded in 1921 by citizens of Vesterlund and has existed as an efterskole since its foundation. In 1979, the school acquired the former municipal school; its buildings are now integrated into the efterskole. School history and archaeology thus provide distinct points of emphasis alongside nature and trails. The school’s foundation by citizens of Vesterlund anchors its history directly in the locality.

Vesterlund Kro has been documented as an inn since the 1870s and was later converted into a café and campsite. The RAF memorial stone in Vesterlund was the site of several commemorative ceremonies over several decades. The local history thus encompasses former hospitality, changes in use and remembrance; alongside the landscape, a historical perspective on the locality emerges.
