Promenade and Harbour

The 1.3-kilometre promenade is considered the town’s main tourist route. Its attractions include restaurants, taverns, cafés, shops, water sports equipment rental outlets, marinas and a passenger ship harbour. The town harbour stretches along almost the entire length of the promenade, which was modernised in 2022. If you’re choosing a destination based on harbour and waterfront life, this is a clear focal point in Mikołajki.

Walking and Cycling Routes

For a walk to see the sights, the 4.7-kilometre “Zwiedzamy Mikołajki” route takes you to the town’s main attractions. Another route focuses more on the waterside landscape: “Wzdłuż jeziora Mikołajskiego” is 4.9 kilometres long and passes through Mikołajki and the surrounding forest. It crosses a footbridge to the lake’s west bank and then follows the water, with views of the town. The descriptions of the two routes make their different focuses clear: town sights on the one hand, forest and lakeshore on the other.

There’s also a guide for cycling trips: the signposted cycling routes are circular, each starting and ending in Mikołajki. This makes their layout different from the two walking routes described above. You can take your preferred type of outing into account as you plan your trip.

Water Activities and Leisure

Full-day passenger boat trips run from Mikołajki to Giżycko, Ryn or Ruciane-Nida. Mikołajki also has a municipal swimming beach with showers and lifeguard supervision. Another option for families is the “Mikołajska Pętla Czasu” outdoor adventure game. It can be played using an app or in a paper version. The paper version is available from the tourist information office or can be printed out at home. This gives you a choice of both waterside activities and a game in town during your stay.

History and Events

The Muzeum Reformacji Polskiej explores the Reformation movement in Poland and Masuria, as well as the history of Mikołajki. Its collection includes numerous old prints, photographs and other documents. If you’re interested in the region’s history, this offers a different way to discover the town than walking or taking part in activities on the lake.

One notable building is the Kościół Ewangelicko-Augsburski Świętej Trójcy: the Neoclassical Protestant church was built in 1842 to a design by Karl Friedrich Schinkel. A legend associated with Mikołajki is also part of the local events calendar. During the Dni Mikołajek, the “Król Sielaw” is launched into the water every year; the event depicts one part of the legend. The “Festiwal Szantowy” has been held in Mikołajki for more than 40 years. Around the turn of July and August, sailing songs ring out on the shore of Lake Mikołajskie.
