Stavreby’s Local History

Stavreby is mentioned in Valdemar’s Land Register from around 1250. Before the land consolidation, Stavreby was an irregularly laid-out linear village with a winding road pattern. A large village pond in the centre divided Stavreby into an eastern and a western part. It thus formed a distinctive dividing line within the village. The original structure is still recognizable; three farms and individual houses remain in their original locations. The roads, village pond, and buildings together reveal the former layout of the village.

The buildings at Stavreby Strand were not constructed until after 1836. Around 1880, the fisherman Hans Jensen, who came from Copenhagen, settled at Stavreby Strand and built a house at 7 Stavreby Strandvej. Stavreby Magasin, a grain store east of Stavreby Strand on the main road, was built in 1863; a plaque bearing the inscription “C.J. From” is located on the gable end. The local history of the beach area therefore includes both the settlement of a fisherman and the use of the store as a grain store.

Stavreby Strand: Coast and Shipping

In 1887, Stavreby Strand was a “Udskibningssted” (shipping point) with a shipping pier. South of the old shipping point, the “Gedsergård-broen” was established as a new shipping point for sugar beets after the sugar factory in Nykøbing was built. The sugar factory brought the transport of sugar beets as an additional purpose to the beach area. Commercial fishing is no longer carried out from Stavreby Strand today; instead, it is used by many recreational anglers. The former function of handling goods and today’s use by recreational anglers are therefore clearly distinct.
