Bildsø between beach, forest and coastal paths

Bildsø brings together beach, forest and outdoor activity. Bildsø Beach is one of the Blue Flag beaches in Slagelse Municipality and is also a protected area within the municipality. Here, the coast can be explored through hiking, nature observation and traces of history.

Beach and forest as a coastal landscape

Bildsø Beach can be reached via Drøsselbjergvej, up to a car park at the northeastern corner of Bildsø Skov. From there, a path leads through the forest to the beach. Bildsø Skov is a public forest extending to Musholm Bay and consists of a mixture of deciduous and coniferous trees. Paths lead to the beach and to viewpoints overlooking the bay.

Bildsø Skov also has a public outdoor exercise and fitness area with just under 20 wooden and stone training stations. Along the coast, the forest offers opportunities for hiking and cycling.

Coastal hiking trails and nature observation

Musholmleden is a 58-kilometre coastal hiking trail from Reersø to Korsør on the Great Belt. One section of the trail is located near Bildsø Skov. The trail is signposted, mostly flat, and runs along gravel roads, field paths and short paved sections.

Near Bildsø Skov, Musholmleden runs alongside a lush deciduous forest with abundant birdlife. The Sjællandsleden hiking trail also passes through the Bildsø Skov area.

Protected landscape with a long history

The present-day appearance of Bildsø Skov also has a history: the forest was established in 1855 under the difficult conditions found along the coast. Its mix of deciduous and coniferous trees, together with its extension to Musholm Bay, shapes the landscape. Bildsø Beach complements this setting as a protected area and as one of the Blue Flag beaches in Slagelse Municipality.

The historical dimension of Bildsø includes several Stone Age monuments. Langhøj, mv., Bildsø (#1) is a protected Stone Age long barrow dating from between 3950 and 2801 BC. Horsedysse is a protected Stone Age long dolmen in Bildsø with three chambers, approximately 50 kerbstones, dimensions of 30 × 8 metres and a height of 1 metre.

Rundhøj, mv., Bildsø (#3) is a Stone Age round barrow with a dolmen or passage grave dating from between 3950 and 2801 BC. As a round dolmen, it has a diameter of 8 metres and 23 kerbstones. Lake Bildsø was originally a 67-hectare, fish-rich and shallow lake by the village of the same name.
