Rune Stones and Local History
The church in Gørlev houses two historic Rune Stones from the Viking Age in its former weapons chamber. The smaller Rune Stone is dated to around the year 1000, while the larger Gørlev Stone dates from around 800 to 850. Both monuments give the town a clear cultural-historical focus.
The development of Gørlev is also connected with important buildings and transport routes: the sugar refinery and the railway station were instrumental in this regard. Den Gamle Biograf was built in 1916; today, the building houses Gørlev Filmklub and serves as a meeting place for cultural activities and events.
Heritage Railway and Cultural Experiences
The 5-kilometre Høng–Gørlev Veteran Railway is a standard-gauge heritage railway outside the commercial railway network. Vestsjællands Veterantog mainly organises family excursions on this route using the heritage railway train. In addition, Musikcaféen in Gørlev offers a varied programme of concerts and cultural events for music enthusiasts of all ages.
Nature at Gørlev Lake
The circular route around Gørlev Lake leads across a wooden footbridge and provides access to a floating platform with an equipment box for observing small animals in the water. The route also offers beautiful views and numerous facilities. Play and motor-skills equipment can be used free of charge at the nature playground at Gørlev Lake.
The shelter site at Gørlev Lake has two shelters. They are used on a first-come, first-served basis.
Water, Trails and Coastal Landscapes
Canoeing and kayaking are permitted on the Nedre Halleby Å in the area around Gørlev. The river lies 2 to 3 kilometres north of Gørlev. For canoeing and kayaking, the Nedre Halleby Å north of Gørlev can be included as a water activity in the day's plans. The 26-kilometre, flat Værslevstien walking trail follows a former railway line between Kalundborg and Gørlev. At 26 kilometres, Værslevstien should be planned as a longer trail section; its flat route makes time planning easier. For another landscape experience, Bjerge Sydstrand lies a few kilometres to the west and offers shallow water, dunes and a long sandy beach. Its western location and the distance of a few kilometres should be taken into account when planning journeys around Gørlev.
The lake Tissø is also located in the area and is associated with the discovery of the Viking Age Tissø Treasure. In the immediate vicinity of Gørlev lies Bavnehøj, a Bronze Age burial mound that was later used as a medieval beacon mound.
Family Destinations and Local Flavours
Naturpark Gateway provides visitors with information about local nature experiences and serves as an entrance to Naturpark Åmosen. In Gørlev, Naturpark Gateway is also a Viking playground. During the summer market days at Gørlev's Bytorvet, the local speciality Sorte Sild is offered.
