Heathland, coast and harbour in Havnsø

Havnsø combines a harbour, heathland and beaches into a coastal landscape offering a variety of options for your trip. Vesterlyng lies at the western end of Havnsø. The local landscape includes hiking trails across Vesterlyng, beaches, the harbour and ferries to the island of Nekselø.

Eskebjerg Vesterlyng and Mareskoven

Eskebjerg Vesterlyng contains Zealand’s largest heathland area, with scattered vegetation. The landscape includes grazed heathland with juniper scrub, as well as beach meadows and dune areas. A long stone structure separates the area from the adjacent farmland. Since 1945, Eskebjerg Vesterlyng has been protected under the Danish Nature Protection Act; the area is also part of Natura 2000 site no. 154. A total of 1,819 species have been recorded in the area, including 199 Red List species. Mareskoven complements this natural area as an approximately 6-hectare old coppice woodland of hazel and elm.

Hiking trails with different trail characteristics

Two marked hikes begin at the large P6 car park on Vesterlyng. Bjergstien is approximately 15 kilometres long, runs from Eskebjerg Vesterlyng via Højsted Overdrev and Stokkebjerg Skov, and ends at Jyderup station via Jyderupstien. Some sections of the route are not signposted. Anyone planning this route should take its approximate length and the partly missing signage into account when navigating. Istidsruten runs across Eskebjerg Vesterlyng, while coastal paths connect Havnsø with the surrounding villages along the coast of Sejerø Bay. At the access roads to Eskebjerg Vesterlyng, information boards direct visitors to the car parks in the area.

Beaches and Havnebad

Eskebjerg Vesterlyng beach is 5 kilometres long, child-friendly and characterised by white, stone-free sand. The North Beach by car park 1 is designated as an official Nordic bathing spot. The beaches east and west of Havnsø Havn are suitable for swimming in calm waters and offer views of Nekselø and Sejerø. Havnsø Havnebad offers winter swimming, a sauna and a playground, creating opportunities for activities and community in Havnsø.

Harbour, ferries and maritime history

Havnsø Havn is a combined fishing, ferry and marina facility with 250 permanent berths for pleasure boats. The harbour has a slipway where boats can be launched and hauled out of the water, as well as visitor berths and service facilities. Havnsø Havn has been awarded the Blue Flag. Ferries from Havnsø travel to the protected island of Nekselø.

VÆRFTET is a member-run association offering numerous social and cultural activities for the public in Havnsø. The association is housed in a former wooden shipyard connected to the maritime surroundings of Havnsø Havn.
