Medieval urban history in Højbyen

Højbyen is Kalundborg’s medieval town center, with an unchanged street plan from the 13th century. Højbyen also contains the ruins of Esbern Snare’s fortifications. Lindegården is a rare surviving half-timbered farmstead in a Danish market town. The historic town center thus combines a preserved street plan with fortification ruins and a surviving half-timbered farmstead.

Museum and Vor Frue Kirke

The Kalundborg Museum focuses in particular on the Middle Ages in Kalundborg. The museum displays a model showing what the town looked like in the Middle Ages. Vor Frue Kirke is open daily from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Guided tours of Vor Frue Kirke must be arranged with the church office. For your visit, opening hours and the tour appointment should be considered separately: the daily opening hours specify the time window for the church, while a guided tour requires an additional arrangement with the church office.

Water, trails, and towers

Gisseløre has walking and cycling routes with views of Kalundborg and the five distinctive towers of Vor Frue Kirke. Kalundborg Havnepark is a waterside urban area with a maritime playground and a beach volleyball court. Thus, in this part of Kalundborg, both routes with views and named waterside facilities form part of the townscape.

Getting there and the connection to Samsø

Kalundborg Station is the terminus of the Nordvestbanen railway line; a bus terminal is also directly connected to the station. SAMSØLINJEN operates between Kalundborg on Zealand and Ballen on Samsø; the crossing takes 90 minutes. Ballen is the explicitly named destination on Samsø, while Kalundborg is the starting point of the ferry connection. The station is part of the land-based journey, while SAMSØLINJEN provides the ferry connection across the water.

Kalundborg Middelalderfestival is a historic festival held in and around Højbyen in Kalundborg. The venue thus connects with the medieval town center as a historic setting.

Round trip ved Møllebakken

In addition to the trails and cycling routes at Gisseløre, Kalundborg has the Rundtour ved Møllebakken. It runs along paved paths and provides an easily accessible experience for all users.
