Coast, beach and landscape

Ornum focuses on a coastal landscape where beaches, heathland and paths by the water offer different perspectives. Ornum Beach lies north of the Reersø peninsula and stretches for approximately 2½ km between the mouth of the Nedre Halleby Å in the south and the Sukkerkanalen in the north. To the west, the beach is bordered by the Storebælt, and to the east by holiday-home areas. The coastal location on the Storebælt, the heathland and the Musholmleden shape the area's geographical orientation.

Ornum Hede and the Musholmleden

Ornum Hede is a natural area near the Storebælt. The Nedre Halleby Å flows through Ornum Hede; small areas of heathland lie above reed beds along the river. The area is part of Natura 2000 site no. 157. A few specimens of Plettet Kongepen grow on Ornum Hede. In the 2019 Danish Red List, the plant is classified as “Near Threatened” (NT). In addition, 246 plant species have been recorded on Ornum Hede.

Those wishing to explore Ornum on foot can use the Musholmleden as a geographical reference. The route runs along the Storebælt coast between Bildsø Beach, Reersø and Kalundborg. It offers a varied natural experience with open beach meadows, small coves, low cliffs, fields, woodland and wide views of the sea. The route through Ornum Hede along the Nedre Halleby Å is part of the Musholmleden. This makes it possible to experience coastal and heathland sections within the same natural setting, without equating the individual landscapes.

Views and orientation by the water

A viewing tower on Reersøvejen offers views over Flasken and Fællesfolden towards Kalundborg. From the car park near Ornum, a path follows the beach and reaches the mouth of the Halleby Å into Jammerland Bay after 2 km. Near Ornum, there is a car park with toilets north of Fællesfolden.

Cultural landscape and traditional history

The coastal area from Reersø to Ornum Beach is designated as a continuous cultural landscape area. On Reersø, Dronningestenen and an area of nine square metres surrounding it were officially protected in 1932. The tradition surrounding Dronningestenen tells that the queen stopped to rest near Ornum on her way to Kalundborg. At the site of her resting place, she is said to have given the residents of Reersø a piece of land that served them as a resting place on the way to Kalundborg.

Fællesfolden, Flasken and the Nedre Halleby Å

In autumn and winter, waders, ducks, swans and gulls may stay in Flasken. Fællesfolden comprises extensive areas of dunes, dry grassland and beach meadows; access to Fællesfolden is restricted to the beach. The relevant section of the Nedre Halleby Å extends from approximately 400 metres downstream from the Ornum Bridge to its mouth in the Storebælt.
