Rødvig: Coast, Beach and Maritime History
If you want to understand Rødvig in terms of landscape, activity and history, start your orientation at Stevns Klint and continue to the harbour. Between steep coastal cliffs, sandy beaches, marked hiking routes and maritime exhibitions, this destination offers distinctly different facets.
Cliffs, Sea Views and Sandy Beaches
Stevns Klint is a steep coastal cliff approximately 17 kilometres long. It stretches from Bøgeskov Havn in the north to Rødvig Havn in the south. From the terminus of the Østbanen railway, it is only a few hundred metres to a sea view – a specific point of reference if you want to begin your days on the coast.
Rødvig Sandstrand offers a different coastal experience. The beach is more than 1 kilometre long and faces southwest. It is also a child-friendly sandy beach that extends westwards from Rødvig Harbour.
Hiking Between Cliff and Sea
The Stevns Klint Trampesti is a marked hiking trail along the entire Stevns Klint. As a hiking route, it is 22 kilometres long and runs close to the cliff and the sea. Along the way, it also passes traces from the last period of the dinosaurs and runs through the UNESCO World Heritage site. From Rødvig Marina, you can follow the Stevns Klint Trampesti along the coast.
The quay promenade at Rødvig Marina also characterises the town’s maritime side. Along the promenade, there are restaurants and cafés overlooking the water. This allows you to combine an active day on the coast with time at the harbour without leaving the thematic focus on the sea and shipping.
Engines, Flint and the History of the Coast
The Rødvig Ship Engine Museum has more than 300 engines dating from 1903 to 1973. The museum also displays a 20-tonne fishing boat that stands on land. For visitors interested in technology and the maritime working environment, this provides an engaging addition to the harbour landscape.
Stevns Klint Experience conveys the story of the asteroid impact that led to the extinction of the dinosaurs 66 million years ago, in a landscape designated as a UNESCO World Heritage site. The facility also includes a VR world about the Chicxulub asteroid.
Another historic structure is Rødvig Flintovn. It is a 3.5-metre-high square building with a 5-metre-high chimney and an observation platform. The third reconstruction of Rødvig Flintovn was built in 1987. As early as 1870, the enterprising skipper Rasmus Larsen had the idea of building a flint kiln in the harbour of Rødvig. The intention was to use flint from Stevns’s cliffs for the glaze on the faience products made by the Aluminia factory in Christianshavn, Copenhagen.
