Kerteminde

The small town of Kerteminde lies in the northeast of the Danish Baltic island of Funen, right on the Great Belt strait. Kerteminde is a small center for this holiday region, with numerous holiday homes, hotels and campsites at the gateway to the Hindsholm peninsula, which extends into the Baltic Sea between Odense Fjord and the Great Belt. Kerteminde is traditionally known for its old town with historic half-timbered houses, as well as for its highly developed dining scene, featuring numerous award-winning chefs. Located close to the island’s capital, Odense , Kerteminde is also a destination for many day-trippers. The bay on which Kerteminde lies is ideally suited to a harbor, so it is no coincidence that Kerteminde is the largest fishing port on the island of Funen. The newest attraction and most popular excursion destination in Kerteminde is the Fjord & Belt Center, which showcases the underwater world of the Baltic Sea, including through a 50-meter-long underwater tunnel. The Fjord & Belt Center is an experience for the whole family on a Baltic Sea holiday in Denmark. Here, visitors can watch dolphins being fed and trained. During the summer months, holidaymakers can enjoy a varied program of activities, such as crab-catching contests, snorkeling and boat trips. Unique throughout Scandinavia is the Viking ship burial at the Viking Museum in Kerteminde. In 925, a Viking chieftain was buried in his ship, which is on display here in the museum.

Long sandy beaches stretch north and south of Kerteminde, all the way to Fyns Hoved at the northern tip of the Hindsholm peninsula. There is also a nature reserve here, home to numerous plant and bird species. Fyns Hoved has the lowest rainfall in Denmark and is therefore rich in sun-loving plants. The special light created by the sunshine also attracted many painters. Kerteminde promotes its “blue”—that is, maritime—experiences. These include the Blue Flag awarded to its beaches as a mark of quality, as well as the marina, with no fewer than 700 berths.
The countryside around Kerteminde is perfect for an active family holiday, whether you’re hiking through varied landscapes dotted with old manor houses or cycling through beautiful natural surroundings. Boat rentals, mini golf, a golf course and even beach handball are further highlights of a Baltic Sea holiday on the coast of the Danish island of Funen.
