Tåsinge
The island of Tåsinge in the South Funen Archipelago lies just south of Denmark’s second-largest island, ]]Funen. Tåsinge is rarely regarded as an island in its own right, as it forms the link between Funen and Langeland. Thanks to its attractive location, Tåsinge is part of one of the most popular holiday regions on Denmark’s Baltic coast: the so-called South Funen Archipelago, between and around the islands of Ærø, Langeland, Funen and Als. Tåsinge’s largest town, Vindeby, lies directly opposite the city of ]Svendborg ]on Funen and is accessible by bridge. Together with the small neighbouring island of Thurø to the northeast, Tåsinge is a typical holiday island. Nevertheless, about 6,000 people live there, on an area of 70 square kilometres. The gently sloping shores are mostly developed for swimming, and several marinas accommodate numerous pleasure boats in summer. Tåsinge also offers affordable accommodation, with holiday homes and campsites especially inviting visitors to enjoy a Baltic coast holiday in Denmark.
Tåsinge’s main attraction is Valdemars Slot, near Troense in the northeast of the island. The legendary Danish King Christian IV had it built for his son Valdemar Christian by 1644. A few decades later, Admiral Niels Juel acquired it. It remains in the possession of his family to this day, but visitors can tour its richly furnished rooms. Its historic ships and ship models in particular have made it a popular attraction and excursion destination on Tåsinge. The grounds of the castle are also home to the Ambrosius Oak, which is around 400 years old. The small bay of Tåsinge Vejle in the west of the island is also of particular interest to nature lovers. With a water depth of less than one metre, the bay has become a popular resting place for water birds.
One of Scandinavia’s most famous couples, Elvira Madigan and Sixten Sparre, are buried in the cemetery at Landet. They took their own lives there in 1889. The island of Tåsinge is an ideal destination for an active family holiday on Denmark’s Baltic coast. Golf, fishing and cycling holidays—which are especially popular and actively promoted in Denmark—are all ways to make your holiday both relaxing and full of experiences.
