Simrishamn Kivik
The port town of Simrishamn lies on Sweden’s southeastern coast, at the southern end of Hanö Bay on the Baltic Sea. Simrishamn is in the province of Skåne and was therefore under Danish rule until 1658. The first recorded mentions date back to the 12th century. Thanks to its exposed location, Simrishamn has always been an important port. Until the 1980s, Simrishamn had Sweden’s largest fishing fleet. Today, there is a ferry connection to the port of Allinge on the Danish Baltic Sea island of Bornholm. Simrishamn is the largest town along the long stretch of coast between Ystad and Åhus. North and south of Simrishamn are numerous picturesque fishing villages: Vitemölla, Kivik, Vik, Baskemölla, Brantevik, Gislövshammar and Skillinge. Each place has its own distinctive character and is well worth a visit.
There are plenty of traces of the past, and therefore numerous excursion ideas for holidaymakers on Sweden’s Baltic coast, who enjoy staying in holiday homes and campsites in and around Simrishamn.
Glimmingehus, a few kilometres southwest of Simrishamn, is Sweden’s best-preserved medieval castle. For 500 years, it has remained virtually unchanged and, above all, undestroyed. Its excellent condition gives visitors a vivid picture of what life was like centuries ago, particularly in the kitchen, which has been set up as a museum. Various medieval-themed events are held here during the summer season.
Stenshuvud National Park, north of Simrishamn, covers an area of 380 hectares along the coast of Hanö Bay. Stenshuvud (Stone Head) is one of Sweden’s most species-rich and varied national parks. Numerous archaeological finds and cultural heritage sites are reminders of the past. On a clear day, the view from the 97-metre-high Stenshuvud mountain stretches as far as Bornholm.
The town of Kivik lies immediately above the national park and is part of Simrishamn Municipality. Kivik is known for Sweden’s largest apple-growing area and its associated processing industry.
Every year, Kivik hosts Kiviks Marknad for several days. This is Sweden’s largest market, with a centuries-old tradition, and in 2009 alone it attracted around 150,000 visitors eager to browse, shop and enjoy themselves. The entire stretch of coast between Simrishamn and Kivik offers almost unlimited opportunities for a family holiday in Sweden, with beaches, cultural, historical and nature-based excursions, and plenty of holiday homes and campsites.
