Since 2003 all municipalities of the island are united together and form a city of Fehmarn. The largest settlement here is the seaside health resort of Burg. By the island position Fehmarn belongs to one of the sunniest regions of Germany. With 185 square km area it is the third-biggest German island which has more than 25 hotels, 17 camping places as well as numerous holiday apartments.
In the 78-kilometre-long coastal line are located different cliffs, sandy beaches and natural sea coasts with five yacht harbours. Three natural reserves form the most attractive part of the island. They offer hiking as well as cycling tours of 171 kilometers in total.
Since 1963 the bridge сonnects the mainland with the island. On the so-called "Vogelfluglinie" (flights of the bird route) the traffic is directed further to Denmark. Therefore, the neighboring Baltic land is also an interesting destination for those who spend their time in Fehmarn.
Nevertheless, the island itself has a lot to show to the guests. Fishing in the ocean, cutter journeys, pony-horse riding, sailing and sporting boat schools as well as sea water indoor swimming pool - there is only a little part of what is really waiting for you. Only five lighthouses stamp the picture of the outside coast and testify of the sea dangers. The sea centre of Fehmarn grants an insight into tropical seas with its gigantic sea water aquariums.
