The duchy of Holstein is situated to the south from Schleswig and closely сonnected with it. In spite of the Danish supremacy (for some time the duchy was still a part of the German empire) the relations with the northern neighboring country were not as narrow as with Schleswig. Only since the affiliation to Prussia (1864) and later to the German empire Kiel has developed into the principal place and to the today's capital of Schleswig-Holstein.
The part of Holstein close to Baltic Sea begins in the mouth of the Kiel Canal and ends immediately to the east of Lübeck and the estuary of the Trave River. Half way between Lübeck and Kiel the Holsteinische Schweiz stretches not far from the Baltic Sea coast. The hilly country was mostly formed after the last ice age and is characterized by the numerous lakes. The most part of the region is the nature park Holsteinische Schweiz. The coast of Holstein is one of those places which are visited with great pleasure.
In addition, in the triangle of Kiel-Lübeck-Fehmarn there are a lot of places of interest which highly recommended for visiting.
