Umeå

The present-day city of Umeå was founded in 1622 and is one of many Swedish cities founded by King Gustav II Adolf. Umeå is the capital of the Swedish province of Västerbotten and lies on the Gulf of Bothnia in the Baltic Sea. The Ume River, which flows from Lapland, empties here. Umeå is a city of industry and science. Since the early 1960s, with more than 110,000 inhabitants, Umeå has been the largest city in Norrland (Northern Sweden). Umeå will be a European Capital of Culture in 2014.
Umeå is ideally located for transport, on Sweden’s north–south E4 route and the new coastal Bothnia Line. Ferries run across the Baltic Sea from the port of Holmsund to the Finnish city of Vaasa, and the airport close to the city offers 14 daily flights to Stockholm . The E12 runs along the Ume River to Mo i Rana in Norway. This makes Umeå a popular holiday destination with a well-developed tourist infrastructure. Numerous hotels and holiday homes, a conference centre, Northern Sweden’s largest shopping district and countless restaurants attract visitors after they have enjoyed the natural beauty of Northern Sweden. Horse-riding, cycling and boat trips in summer; dog-sledding, cross-country skiing and ice skating in winter; and fishing or ice fishing in both seasons are among the features of this year-round tourist region on the Baltic Sea in Northern Sweden. The Aquarena water park is also an ideal place to relax at any time of year. Arosfortet/Megazone offers a unique kind of entertainment centre. Billiards, a bouncy castle, arcade games and unusual competitive group games combine to create an unforgettable holiday experience.
Off the coast of Umeå lies a varied coastline, and the island of Holmön is connected by a free ferry. Holmön is a paradise for bird lovers and one of Sweden’s largest marine protected areas. The municipality has 70 kilometres of coastline along the Baltic Sea. A 30-kilometre cycling route follows the Ume River, bringing the beauty of the landscape within easy reach. Just a few kilometres upstream, near Sörfors, is Sweden’s largest hydroelectric power station. A holiday in and around Umeå combines the experience of a vibrant modern city with the unspoilt landscape along the Baltic coast, with hotels and holiday homes offering comfortable accommodation.
