Nyköping
At the end of a Baltic Sea bay on Sweden’s east coast lies the old town of Nyköping. If you are driving north from the south on the E4 towards Stockholm, the final 100 kilometres from here take exactly one hour. In recent years, the nearby former military airfield of Skavsta has become a popular destination for low-cost airlines. Boldly branding itself Stockholm-Skavsta, it offers regular bus services to Sweden’s capital.
Nyköping is one of Sweden’s oldest towns, with early medieval roots preserved at Nyköpingshus Castle, and for a time it was a royal residence of national significance. Because of a town fire and later destruction by Russian troops, no buildings from its earliest period have survived. Today, after a long period as an industrial town, Nyköping has developed into a service centre with plenty of shopping opportunities. Accommodation options are just as varied. Whether you are looking for a bed and breakfast, youth hostel, farm holiday, holiday home, campsite or castle hotel, the town of Nyköping has something to suit every taste.
Nyköping is an ideal base for an active holiday on Sweden’s Baltic coast. After only a short journey, hikes, horse rides and canoe trips take you into the “wilderness”. The town’s harbour is the starting point for boat trips to the nearby archipelago between the well-known coastal towns of Oxelösund and Trosa. Nyköping’s guest harbour has 110 berths for recreational boaters. No fewer than four golf courses in the immediate area attract fans of this Swedish “national sport”. In winter, the archipelago becomes a paradise for ice skaters and skiers, while local authorities monitor the thickness of the ice.
The Södermanland region is known for its many castles and manor houses. Three castles around Nyköping alone invite you to take a journey into the past. Historic car models are on display in the rooms of a hotel in the centre of town. Nyköping combines excellent accessibility with close proximity to both the metropolis of Stockholm and the surrounding countryside, making it an ideal destination for an activity-filled holiday for all ages.
