Valdemarsvik - Gryt Archipelago

The town of Valdemarsvik on Sweden’s Baltic coast, in the province of Östergötland, halfway between Västervik and Norrköping , is the starting point for one of Sweden’s most beautiful coastal landscapes: Gryt Archipelago. Valdemarsvik itself has about 3,000 residents and lies at the end of a 16-kilometre-long fjord-like bay. It is the centre of a holiday area with a range of shopping and leisure facilities, including a supermarket, small shops, an indoor swimming pool, an ice rink and numerous berths for pleasure boats. A little gem is the town’s rose garden.
Valdemarsvik is connected by the well-maintained Route 212 to the coastal communities of Gryt and Fyrudden, and to the archipelago areas around Gryt and Tjust. The outermost outpost is Hårstena, a former seal-hunting island whose guest harbour is visited by up to 6,000 pleasure boats each year. Guests can also make use of a kiosk, a bakery and a restaurant here. The old fishing harbour of Fyrudden on the outer coast bears witness to the region’s former livelihood. Today it serves as both an industrial and a leisure harbour. The coastline within the municipality stretches for 700 kilometres, owing to its exceptionally indented shape and numerous islands. Campsites, holiday homes, hotels and youth hostels in this attractive holiday area offer accommodation in unique surroundings, ideal for an active holiday on the Baltic Sea. The waters of the Gryt archipelago are perfect for boating, fishing and, of course, swimming, with many secluded, hidden sandy beaches to enjoy. Freshly smoked fish in small fishing villages rounds off the holiday experience.
The inland surroundings of Valdemarsvik also offer plenty of opportunities for excursions, including hikes, cycling and canoeing through the varied countryside, a horseback ride or a visit to the Valdemarsvik golf course. The village of Gusum, northwest of Valdemarsvik, is known for its brass products, which are also available for purchase.
