Helsingør

The town of Helsingør lies just a few kilometres north of Copenhagen, on the island of Zealand, and the train journey takes just under 30 minutes. From here, across the narrowest part of the Øresund, you can see the Swedish town of Helsingborg, reachable by frequent ferry services. Helsingør offers an extraordinary variety of things to do, with countless ways to enjoy a holiday in Denmark to suit every taste.
Two beaches on Zealand’s north coast welcome families, swimmers and sun-seekers. There is a romantic atmosphere here, from the early-morning hours at the fishing harbour to evenings in the old town and along the shores of the Øresund. Whether hiking, joining a guided cycling tour or taking a sightseeing trip, Kronborg Castle is one of the most popular destinations, as is a day trip to neighbouring Sweden.

City-break visitors can discover the legends, myths and true events surrounding Shakespeare’s Hamlet. Following the trail of a key scene from the play, they can explore the old town’s winding streets without losing their way, while gaining vivid impressions of life in Helsingør as a ferry port and trading town. Kronborg Castle is said to be the setting for the great drama about Hamlet, the prince of Denmark.

Many stories are woven around this castle on the shores of the Øresund. Inside, the immense rooms—such as the Great Hall—and a gallery that seems almost alive, depicting graceful ships and devastating naval battles, outshine the otherwise distinctly royal interiors.

The beautiful, gently rolling countryside around Helsingør is a favourite destination for excursions. You can enjoy it on the golf and mini-golf courses, on horseback or on inline skates. The Transport Museum, the Øresund Aquarium, the Carmelite Monastery and the Marienlyst water park offer ways to make up for a day outdoors missed due to bad weather at one of Zealand’s most pleasant holiday destinations: the town of Helsingør.
