Gelting to Maasholm
The coast of the Angeln peninsula between the Flensburg Fjord and the Schlei is shaped by the small seaside resorts of Gelting, Kronsgaard, Hasselberg and Maasholm. In Gelting Bay, at the southern entrance to the Flensburg Fjord, Gelting-Wackerballig Marina invites leisure sailors to linger in the surroundings of Gelting, a health resort known for its fresh air and Kneipp therapy. The seaside resort of Kronsgaard, on the open Baltic Sea, takes its name from a former royal farm.
The natural, tax-free beaches, extending from Hasselberg to the mouth of the Schlei, are among the most beautiful in the region. The former seafaring and fishing village of Maasholm stands out somewhat from the other towns in terms of its importance as a tourist destination. The fishing harbour is still home to several deep-sea trawlers, and its marina is one of the largest on the Baltic Sea.
The entire municipality lies within a protected landscape area. Daily guided tours of the neighbouring “Oehe-Schleimünde” bird sanctuary, which also features a nature discovery centre, are led by the bird warden. A campsite and beach are located near the Maasholm-Bad district. Schleimünde lies at the very narrow mouth of the Schlei; it is a small harbour with a pub and a lighthouse.
This entire area is characterised by its peaceful setting and yet is easily accessible via the B 199. Well-signposted cycle routes criss-cross the appealing natural landscape of the rural surroundings. Campsites and holiday apartments are the main types of accommodation.
