Grisslehamn
Grisslehamn lies at the northern tip of the island of Väddö, a narrow, elongated island separated from the mainland only by a narrow stretch of water that can be crossed by bridge. Väddö also forms the northern boundary of the Stockholm archipelago. Grisslehamn, part of the municipality of Norrtälje , is located in Stockholm County, but in the historic region of Roslagen. The so-called Åland Sea lies off Grisslehamn, a part of the Baltic Sea that separates Sweden from the Åland Islands, which belong to Finland but are Swedish-speaking. A ferry runs from here to Eckerö in the Åland Islands. Traditionally, the island of Väddö was also the starting point for crossings from Sweden to Finland via the Åland Islands. In the mid-18th century, the present-day village of Grisslehamn was newly established as a post station between Sweden and Finland, which at the time was also part of Sweden. Since 1974, traditional sailing and rowing boat trips have been held along the old route. The Roslagen Maritime Museum in Älmsta, near the bridge crossing, also recalls this era.
Today, Grisslehamn is a popular destination for day-trippers and holidaymakers seeking peace and quiet in the seclusion of nature, just as the Swedish writer and artist Albert Engström did in his day; a museum dedicated to him now stands here. The approximately 300 residents are joined in summer by almost twice as many people staying in their summer homes.
Grisslehamn offers a wide range of activities for an active holiday on the Baltic Sea. These include golf, mini golf, cycling, sailing, paddling, fishing and, last but not least, swimming at various bathing spots on Väddö. In summer, Väddö farm invites visitors on a cow safari—an excursion to a working cattle farm—and there is also a riding school offering Icelandic horses nearby. The Bergby Nature Reserve near Grisslehamn is home to remarkable stands of rare orchids, and bird lovers can also enjoy the coast. Visitors can choose from high-quality hotels, a campsite, and numerous holiday homes and apartments. Grisslehamn is a recommended holiday destination in one of the most beautiful parts of Sweden’s Baltic coast.
