Als (Alsen) Island
Location and history of Als
Denmark’s seventh-largest island, Als (also known as Alsen), lies just off the east coast of the Jutland peninsula. Separated from the mainland by the Als Sound, it forms the southeastern corner of the region of Southern Jutland. The island’s largest town and gateway is Sønderborg. Two bridges here connect the island to the mainland, while ferry services run to Funen and from northern Als to the mainland. In addition to Sønderborg Castle, Augustenborg Palace was built from 1770 onwards; both reflect the island’s fragmented history. Augustenborg is the largest and most unified Baroque complex in southern Denmark and, after Gottorf Castle, the region’s largest surviving royal residence in Schleswig.

The best beaches can be found on the south coast and on the island of Kegnæs, which is connected to Als by a causeway. Small forests and rolling open countryside shape the island’s landscape. Several campsites line the east coast. The whole island of Als (Alsen) is a paradise for active family holidays on Denmark’s Baltic coast. Danfoss Universe, an experience centre in Nordborg in the north of the island, home to the Danish Danfoss group, offers a glimpse of the future.
Campsites are the most common type of holiday accommodation on Als (Alsen), followed by holiday homes and hotels.
