Sights in Travemünde

The Baltic Sea resort of Travemünde is considered the “fairest daughter” of the Hanseatic city of Lübeck. In addition to its promenade, shopping street and beach, it has plenty of sights to offer visitors.

Travemünde Old Lighthouse
Travemünde’s landmark, the 31-metre-high lighthouse, was built in 1539, replacing an earlier structure dating from the 14th century. It is therefore the oldest coastal lighthouse on the German coast. It remained in operation until 1972 and was listed as a technical heritage monument as early as 1922. The City of Lübeck had the building completely renovated in 2003. The museum opened its doors a year later. Its exhibition on the history of lighthouse technology spans eight floors. In addition to various ship’s lanterns and former lighting systems from other lighthouses, visitors can also see models of lightships. From the gallery, the view stretches across the Skandinavienkai terminal and Lübeck Bay to the Mecklenburg-Vorpommern coastline.

Four-masted barque “Passat” The four-masted barque “Passat” has been moored on the Priwall, opposite Travemünde’s Old Town, since 1960. In 1978, the 115-metre-long sailing ship was listed as a historic monument to preserve it as an example of German maritime history. Its four 56-metre-high masts carried 4,600 m² of sail. This enabled the barque to reach a speed of 18 knots. Along with the “Pamir” (sunk in 1957), the “Padua” (now sailing as the “Kruzenshtern”) and the “Peking” (now in New York), it is one of the legendary “Flying P-Liners.”
Today, it serves as a youth meeting centre and can be hired for celebrations.

Travemünde Week and Sail Travemünde Two major sailing events are held each year at the Baltic Sea resort. This year, Travemünde Week is taking place for the 118th time (20–29 July 2007). During the event, around 3,000 sailors compete in numerous world, European and German championships, making Travemünde Week the world’s second-largest sailing event. A varied programme of accompanying events also keeps the approximately one million spectators on shore entertained.
Alongside the ports of Halmstad (Sweden), Klaipėda (Lithuania), Gdańsk (Poland), Karlskrona (Sweden), Rostock and Helsingør (Denmark), Travemünde is a destination port in the “Baltic Sail” network. At the end of their four-week voyage, the participating tall ships and vintage sailing vessels make a brief stop at the Baltic Sea resort for Sail Travemünde (23–26 August 2007). Those interested can feel the wind in their hair on a voyage aboard a tall ship.
