Soon after the foundation in 1187 the present seaside health resort of Travemünde passed over into the possession of Lübeck and was officially incorporated in 1907 into the Hanseatic town of Lübeck. Travemünde is one of the oldest and also one of the most significant German Baltic baths.

The historical Old Town, an architecturally impressive seafront, wide sandy beaches and well known landmarks like the tall ship “Passat” or the Scandinavia quay in the biggest European ferry terminal made the name of Travemünde, which had always had many celebrities. The maritime traditions are continued in many different kinds. Even today the caught-fresh fish can be bought directly from the cutter. The “Travemünder Woche” has been held here since1892 and has acquired a reputation as a sailing event. And since 2002 the Priwall beach (a part of the Old Town opposite peninsula) is decorated with the “Sand World” during the sculpture festival.

The old lighthouse (the oldest one in the whole Germany) is today a maritime museum, while the new lighthouse is the highest one on the whole Baltic Sea and is situated on the “Maritim Hotel”. The seaside health resort Travemünde is the сonnection of epochs and maritime traditions of the different times, which are incredibly сonnected on the Baltic Sea.
