Pomeranian State Museum Greifswald
Greifswald is one of the oldest cities in the Baltic region. Since 2010, city tourism in Greifswald in particular has experienced a significant upturn.
Much of the city’s history has been shaped by its university, founded in 1456 and the second oldest in the Baltic region after the University of Rostock. The Pomeranian State Museum in Greifswald, one of the largest new museum buildings in Germany after 1945, also has close ties to the university. The museum project began with the desire to make the university’s valuable art treasures accessible to the public on a permanent basis for the first time, and above all to present them in a fitting setting. This original idea ultimately grew into a unique museum ensemble. The Pomeranian State Museum consists of several reconstructed historic buildings and a connecting modern building. The complex houses an art gallery featuring original works by, among others, Caspar David Friedrich, Greifswald’s most famous son, and Vincent van Gogh; a permanent exhibition on the history of Pomerania; and a hall for temporary exhibitions and events.

The exhibition offers a comprehensive thematic overview of the history of the historic region of Pomerania, which today lies within two countries. The first part of the permanent exhibition, covering the period from the beginnings of Pomeranian history to the Swedish era, opened in 2005. The second section followed in 2010: From the Swedish Era to the Imperial Resort. The third and final part will open at the end of 2020.
The highlight of the entire exhibition is the unique 16th-century Croy Tapestry, displayed in a separate room with a detailed description. Special exhibitions on a wide range of subjects are also regularly shown in the museum. Opportunities for interactive “participation” with various exhibits can be found throughout the exhibition. An herb garden and a glacial erratic garden on the museum grounds provide valuable information about plant cultivation in the past. The extensive museum shop offers not only a wide selection of books, mainly on the history of Pomerania, but also other souvenirs and keepsakes from the Hanseatic city of Greifswald. Together with the museum café, the Pomeranian State Museum complex makes for a highly recommended outing during a Baltic Sea holiday and an attraction for the whole family.
