Hanseatic City of Anklam

The former Hanseatic city of Anklam presents itself as a city with a rich history and as the southern “gateway to Usedom Island”. The mighty brick churches of St. Mary and St. Nicholas still bear witness to its former prosperity. The surviving brick buildings are part of the European Route of Brick Gothic. Since 1989, the Stone Gate, the only surviving city gate, has housed the oldest regional museum in Western Pomerania. A special recommendation is the Otto Lilienthal Museum, dedicated to the inventor of human flight, who was born in Anklam.

The Peene—once the source of the city’s wealth—is affectionately known as the “Amazon of the North”. The Peene Valley is Central Europe’s only unspoilt glacial valley and a refuge for eagles, red deer, beavers, cormorants, cranes and sea eagles. The river is navigable for 110 km and, with its extensive nature reserves, distinctive natural landscapes and areas for outdoor activities, offers peace and relaxation in abundance. As a starting point for canoe, kayak or raft trips, Anklam is the perfect place to explore the Peene independently or on a guided tour and immerse yourself in unspoilt nature. Waterway travellers will find excellent facilities at the waterway rest area, which offers 13 moorings, a slipway, camping facilities, a playground and a modern amenities building.
