Bornholm Art Museum
Bornholm Art Museum is a unique museum in a unique location. The museum was established in 1993 right on the coast of the Baltic island of Bornholm, at one of its most spectacular sites. North of Gudhjem at the Helligdomsklipperne (Sanctuary Cliffs), one of the most beautiful and best-known places on the Baltic island of Bornholm, it offers an insight into the island’s art history. The museum was expanded with an extension in 2003. Bornholm Art Museum’s mission is to present, above all, art and crafts connected with the island of Bornholm. Naturally, this includes the Bornholm School of Painters, whose works occupy most of the exhibition space, which covers more than 4,000 square metres. In addition to its permanent exhibition, Bornholm Art Museum also presents special exhibitions of art, design and crafts.
From the outside, the building—an unassuming structure made of brick, granite, sandstone, wood and zinc—gives no hint of its extraordinary contents. Bornholm Art Museum is distinguished by its striking interior design. Features include a “street” that follows the natural slope and has an almost southern European feel, a light well extending across all three floors, and the “Sanctuary Spring”, which flows through the middle of the building and was once said to have healing properties. Visitors will also appreciate the auditorium, café and shop, which complement the museum’s offerings.
The grounds of Bornholm Art Museum lie directly in front of the steep cliffs. From here, visitors can enjoy views of popular subjects depicted by the many artists of Bornholm. Modern sculptures are also on display. The very architecture of Bornholm Art Museum reflects the islanders’ distinctive identity, as well as their awareness of the value of art on their island. A visit to Bornholm Art Museum is one of the experiences that holidaymakers on the Baltic island of Bornholm should not miss.
