NaturBornholm

Among the destinations that visitors to the Baltic Sea island of Bornholm should make sure to see during their stay is the NaturBornholm information and visitor centre near Aakirkeby in the south of the Baltic island of Bornholm. The building’s exterior is striking in itself. A stone lattice wall surrounds the building, which opened in 2000, and arouses curiosity about what lies behind these unusual walls. NaturBornholm, as much can be said in advance, provides detailed information about the diversity of Bornholm’s natural environment and how it came to be.

Visitors are welcomed at a friendly information desk, where they can consult brochures in several languages, before setting off on a highly vivid journey through the island of Bornholm’s geological history, accompanied by sound effects and interactive experiments—like travelling in a time machine. Highlights of this extraordinary journey, this excursion into Bornholm’s prehistoric past, include experiencing an earthquake and following in the footsteps of a dinosaur. Living crocodiles and turtles may seem unusual at first glance, but they represent the descendants of earlier life forms that also inhabited the Baltic island of Bornholm.

Here, visitors can witness a very rare phenomenon. It is precisely at this spot that the boundary between two geological strata, which extends across Europe, comes to the surface. This boundary separates the Scandinavian granite shield from younger layers and is also responsible for Bornholm’s divided natural landscape. Exposed rock surfaces shaped by the action of water offer a vivid impression of how today’s landforms came into being.

By incorporating authentic natural phenomena, NaturBornholm is a unique source of information about geological history—not only that of the island of Bornholm.
