Delsbo: Church Art, Textile History and Hiking Trails
Accommodation in Delsbo
Delsbo brings together several distinct reasons to visit: church and architectural history, local farmsteads and textile heritage sit alongside opportunities for hiking and other activities. Outdoors, these include the 31-kilometre Sjuvallsleden, Björkparken and heated swimming. You can tailor your choices to whether you want to focus on historic architecture, textiles, a hiking route or a particular activity. The Delsbostämman adds a fixed date in July to these themes.
Church and Architectural History
The first stone church on the site of Delsbo Church was built as early as the 13th century. In 1892–1893, Delsbo Church was converted into a three-aisled basilica, an unusual architectural form in Sweden. This makes it possible to distinguish two building phases at the same site: the early stone church and the later alteration of the church building. Several medieval sculptures are in the church, including a depiction of the Virgin Mary. The architecture and sculptures thus offer two specific ways to explore the history of Delsbo Church. The chronology of the church’s construction and its later alteration are just as striking as the medieval sculptures inside.
Farmsteads, Textiles and Collections
Delsbo Forngård consists of old, well-preserved farmsteads and buildings from the surrounding area. Rather than focusing on a single building, the site brings together several examples of regional architecture. At the Dräkt- och Textilmuseum, the focus shifts from buildings to textile themes. The exhibitions include Delsbodräkterna, Delsbosöm, Delsboknyppling and näversöm. The textile theme thus ranges from regionally named clothing to several named craft techniques. The Agricultural Museum in Delsbo adds another focus, with collections comprising several hundred objects. If you are interested in the area’s cultural history, you can distinguish these attractions by what they cover: historic farmsteads and buildings, clothing and textiles, or objects in the Agricultural Museum’s collections.
Hiking Trail and Activities
The Sjuvallsleden runs between Ofärne and Delsbo, is 31 kilometres long and can be started at either end. It passes through hilly terrain, with viewpoints and lakes along the route. Its length and starting points help you plan the hike, while the terrain and views define its landscape character. Björkparken, in the centre of Delsbo, offers a different choice of activities: skateboarding, cycling and inline skating. The practical distinction from the hiking trail is the type of activity: the park lists three ways to be active, while the Sjuvallsleden is a hiking route of a set length. Utebadet i Delsbo offers heated swimming at 27 °C or above, adding a water activity to the options. For Delsbosvängen, you can park at the road junction near Karlsbruket; the route is signposted from there.
Delsbostämman in July
The Delsbostämman is Sweden’s oldest Spelmansfest and is held every year on the first Sunday in July. It begins with a church-boat trip across Dellen to the church. This is followed by a festive church service that includes folk dancing, among other things; musicians and visitors then make their way to Delsbo Forngård, where the festival begins. The sequence combines a boat trip, a church service and a procession to the festival venue. If you are planning to visit Delsbo for the event, check the annual event details before you travel.
