Those considering Tervola as a travel destination can explore its cultural history and nature at different scales: the Old Church is a specific site, while museums, prehistoric finds, and nature destinations are located partly nearby and partly throughout the municipality. This distinction helps you match your interests with the right scope for your plans.

Old Church and Cultural Heritage

Tervola’s Old Church was built in 1687–1689. It is one of Finland’s best-preserved pillar-supported churches, a type of architecture characteristic of the 17th century. Its construction period and state of preservation give a visit a clear historical focus: the church is not only an example of this architectural style, but also a specific point of reference for Tervola’s history.

There is parking for about ten cars right by the church. Around 100 metres away, the community centre car park has space for several dozen cars. Capacity may change; check the parking situation before your visit.

History in the Surrounding Area and Municipality

Nearby, the Tervolan kotiseutumuseo offers insight into the recent history and culture of Peräpohjola. Its collection includes about 30 buildings and more than 3,000 catalogued items. Agricultural objects and pieces of local cultural heritage tell the story of life and livelihoods among the rural population of Peräpohjola from the late 19th to the early 20th century. The exhibition park adds another historical perspective: it features plant species from the region, including some rare ones.

One of Europe’s largest continuous Stone Age settlements was discovered within the municipality of Tervola. Another way to explore prehistory is at Törmävaara Stone Village: an exhibition on Tervola’s prehistory is housed in the old village school in Varejoki. The site can be explored with a guided tour or independently. Its features also include dwellings reminiscent of turf huts. Together, the settlement find, exhibition, and buildings offer different ways to connect with the history of the municipality.

Nature and Activities in the Municipality

The boulder fields of Kätkävaara are in the northern part of the municipality. These are ancient shorelines, also known as Devil’s Fields. The Kätkävaara Nature Trail is a seven-kilometre circular route showcasing the area’s diverse nature. It is of moderate difficulty; allow three to four hours to complete it, depending on your pace. There is also a separate, 600-metre accessible route around Perälampi by the nature trail. This offers a choice between two routes of different lengths without assigning a specific difficulty level to the shorter one.

Elijärvi is also within the municipality. The small lake has shores that are increasingly overgrown; in spring in particular, many migratory birds can be seen there. This seasonal highlight differs from planning a walk at Kätkävaara: if nature observation is your priority, spring may be a good time to see the birdlife, while the nature trail’s length, difficulty, and walking time provide a clear framework for a day hike.

The Kemijoki offers fishing spots within the municipality and is classified as a watercourse for migratory fish species. The shared permit area includes the river’s main channel and its tributaries within the municipality of Tervola. With the appropriate permit, fishing is allowed from the shore or from a boat. Check the applicable permit rules before your trip.

All swimming spots in the municipality of Tervola have changing rooms, toilets, and a lifebuoy. As facilities may change, it is advisable to check before your visit. Alongside historical attractions, the municipality therefore offers opportunities to include nature, water, and seasonal wildlife in your travel plans.
