Lagoon and birdwatching at Riedensee
Riedensee is a nature reserve north of the municipality of Bastorf. The Baltic Sea lagoon is surrounded by reeds and has a natural, ever-changing connection to the sea. There are two observation platforms on the beach, accessible from there and ideal for birdwatching. From the platforms, you can look out over the lake towards Kühlung and Bastorf Lighthouse. Beach or forest trails
For time at the beach, the district of Kägsdorf within the municipality is a useful point of reference: residents and visitors have direct access to the Baltic Sea beach there. The landscape of Kühlung, southeast of the municipality, offers a different experience. The terminal moraine has forest hiking and cycling trails. You can decide whether you’d rather focus your stay on access to the beach or paths through the forest. Lighthouse and historic manor estate
The BUK Lighthouse is considered a landmark of the municipality of Bastorf and is over 100 years old. It is regarded as the highest-situated lighthouse in Germany; its tower is about 20.8 metres high. Right next to Bastorf Lighthouse, Café Valentins serves homemade cakes and hot sea buckthorn juice.
Another distinctive place is the restored Bastorf manor estate. The complex now serves as a Baltic Sea hotel and holiday farm. The estate includes two thatched barns, a main house and four outbuildings.
Regional produce at the manor estate
There are also several places in Bastorf where you can find regional products. The farm shop is housed in a restored thatched three-aisled barn dating from 1820. It sells regional products and goods made on site. The fruit kitchen regularly makes jams and fruit spreads from local fruit. The oil mill at the manor estate produces cold-pressed sunflower, linseed and rapeseed oil from organic seeds; the oils are available to take away. The BonBon shop offers more than 40 varieties of fruit sweets, including sugar-free varieties, as well as fruit gummies and liquorice.
Children and adults can explore the manor estate’s own fruit and herb garden; there is also a children’s ranch. The experiences described here therefore range from protected natural areas, beaches and forest trails to a manor estate and regional produce.
