Neukalen lies west of Lake Kummerow on the banks of the Teterower Peene, about ten kilometres north of Malchin. The location combines a river course with the lake surroundings and extends partly into the Mecklenburg Switzerland and Lake Kummerow Nature Park.

In the immediate surroundings of Neukalen are Friedrich-Franz-Höhe, Franzensberg and Voßberg. The surrounding area also includes Burgwallinsel.
History and Architectural Heritage
Neukalen is home to the late Gothic, single-nave St. John's Church, dating from the early 15th century; its tower and octagonal spire were completed in 1439. The historic town fortifications included a town wall with rampart and moat, as well as the Mühlen and Malchin Gates. The settlement known as (Alt-)Kalen was first mentioned in official documents in 1174.
