Harbor and waterways
The harbor is on the Peene Canal, which flows into Lake Kummerow, and is just a few minutes’ walk from the market square. Redesigned in 1993, it serves as a meeting place and mooring for water sports enthusiasts. From the harbor, you can explore the surrounding area and waterways by canoe. Motorboats also offer a way to experience the Peene: Yachtcharter Schulz’s base in Neukalen has modern boats for trips along the river and toward the Baltic coast. In the Peene Valley River Landscape Nature Park, watercraft are permitted on the Peene Canal near Neukalen.
Explore the countryside by bike
A cycling tour around Lake Kummerow is a good opportunity to take a detour to Neukalen. The modern harbor and the historic town center with its ring-shaped street layout show two distinct sides of the town. Another cycling route leads from Neukalen to the so-called Aalbude. It runs along the edge of the GroĂźe Rosin renaturation area. The flooded area provides a habitat for numerous animal and plant species; white-tailed eagles and migratory birds can be spotted there. An observation platform at the edge of the forest offers views across the landscape. Neukalen lies amid the Peene Valley River Landscape and Mecklenburg Switzerland and Lake Kummerow nature parks, making it a starting point for excursions to discover the local flora and fauna.
Pedal-powered rail bikes on a disused railway line
Another way to explore the area is by pedal-powered rail bike on the Dargun–Salem railway line, which closed in 1996. The route is about 17 km long and leads to Lake Kummerow. From the starting point in Dargun, Neukalen station can be reached in about one and a half to two hours. The approximate route length and stated travel time give you concrete points of reference when planning this experience into your day. Unlike a cycling tour, the focus here is on riding along the former railway line.
Local history and walks
An exhibition at the Neukalen Railway Museum tells the story of how railway workers’ uniforms developed over several centuries. Various shoulder boards dating from 1872 to 1918 are also on display. Five historic railway carriages stand at the adjacent freight yard; one of them houses a café. Mecklenburg’s oldest intact fire station is also located at Ratmannsteich. These places give your visit a historical focus, while the winding lanes invite you to take a walk through town.
A walking route leads from the market square along LutherstraĂźe and the Promenade, past the former railway station and into Gartsbruch. The route to Salem is well signposted; the tour ends at Ratmannsteich in Neukalen. Annual festivals
Local clubs also shape the cultural scene. The Neukalen Marksmen’s Guild, founded in 1689, holds its annual marksmen’s festival in Gartsbruch at the end of June, together with the club and town festival. Carnival is also part of Neukalen’s cultural life and has been celebrated on a grand scale there since 1958. These dates offer a different kind of opportunity from the activities available year-round: they give you a reason to plan your stay around festival time.
