Discover Malchin: Brick Gothic, museums and waterways

Brick Gothic and local history

St. John’s Church in Malchin is a typical example of North German Brick Gothic architecture. Its features include a Friese organ and a Marian altar dating from around 1430. The church therefore offers a chance to explore different aspects of architectural and art history. The Friese III organ is particularly noteworthy: it is one of just eight large Friese III organs in the region and the only one of them to have been preserved almost entirely in its original condition.

Individual buildings offer a glimpse of the former town fortifications, too. The Kalensches Tor is one of the four gates in Malchin’s former defensive complex and the best-preserved gate in the town’s fortifications. The Fangelturm adds another historical landmark: this six-storey brick defensive tower dates from the 15th century and is said to be freely accessible. The gate and tower differ in function and appearance; together, they illustrate two parts of the former fortifications.

The local history museum is housed in the town mill. Its permanent exhibition is dedicated to Siegfried Marcus. If you would like to visit outside the museum’s opening hours, guided tours can be arranged. This is a practical option if the regular opening hours do not fit your travel plans.

Waterways and cycling

Malchin has a marina as well as the “Koesters Eck” canoeist rest area and harbour. Both are connected to Lake Kummerow via the Peene. A cycling tour around Lake Kummerow starts at Malchin railway station. From there, it passes through one of the historic town gates and into the old town. The Mecklenburg Motorcycle and Vintage Car Rally and the Old Town Festival are held in Malchin every year. The Old Town Festival includes a traditional parade.
