Balow is located in the sparsely populated south of the Ludwigslust-Parchim district, near the state border with Brandenburg. The Tarnitz runs west of the village, while the Löcknitz runs to the east.

Balow is a municipality in the Ludwigslust-Parchim district of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, Germany, and is administered by the Grabow administrative office.

History and surroundings

Balow originated as a Slavic cul-de-sac village, was first documented in 1341, and had been a manor village since the 13th century. The Schwedenschanze is located near Balow. The surrounding area includes the Platschow Elephant Farm, the Wendish rampart, and the castle park. The wider regional area is home to the Burgwall rampart and the ruins of Kuhburg.
