City history at the Mühlentor and St. Mary’s Church
The Grimmen Local History Museum is housed in the Mühlentor, also known as the Tribseeser Gate. It is one of the three surviving city gates in Grimmen’s medieval fortifications, dating from 1325. The location connects the museum with a distinctive part of the city’s history. The collection has its own areas of focus: it includes household items from the 19th and 20th centuries, as well as agricultural equipment in the handicrafts collection. If you are interested in everyday life in the past, you will find both objects from domestic life and evidence of agricultural work here.
St. Mary’s Church in Grimmen also offers a tangible insight into architectural history: construction began around 1275; its oldest section is an Early Gothic hall church with five bays. Grimmen Water Tower serves several purposes: it is a tourist information centre, exhibition space and registry office. With its glass observation room, it is also a viewpoint. You can reach the viewing platform via 116 steps; from there, you can enjoy panoramic views over the historic old town and the surrounding area.
