A fine, white sandy beach defines Karlshagen’s coastline; in places, it is up to 80 meters wide. The supervised bathing beach stretches for a total of 1,200 meters. If you’re planning time at the beach, you’ll find designated areas for naturism, dogs and sports. The Baltic Sea water at the beach has also been awarded the Blue Flag.
Beach Days with Sports and Activities
There are seven permanent volleyball courts on the beach. At the sports beach, you can go windsurfing, kitesurfing, surfing and stand-up paddleboarding. As well as swimming, there are various water sports to choose from. The designated beach areas make it easy to find a spot for naturism, visiting with a dog or sporting activities.
Sports also feature in two recurring events in Karlshagen. The chalk art festival takes place every summer on the square in front of the beach and attracts several hundred participants. The USEDOM-BEACHCUP was first held in 2000 and originated in Karlshagen on Usedom. Today, the tournament held annually in Karlshagen attracts around 1,500 players, who compete on approximately 100 courts.
Nature and Trails on Usedom
At the Karlshagen Nature Conservation Center, you can learn more about Usedom’s nature and birdlife. It features a natural history exhibition and various themed guided tours. On the beach along Usedom’s Baltic coast, there are also beach explorers’ activities: children investigate creatures such as seagulls, jellyfish and shells using magnifying pots and nets. It’s a way to combine time at the beach with a closer look at wildlife.
Cycling and hiking trails around Karlshagen lead towards Peenemünde and, via Zinnowitz, onward towards Koserow. They are considered suitable for families. Harbor and Maritime Activities
Excursion boats depart from the harbor for trips on the Peenestrom. For pleasure boats, the harbor has modern moorings, pier berths and a slipway; pleasure boats can be launched there for a fee. The harbor also appeals to travelers who want to experience Karlshagen from the water or arrive with their own pleasure boat.
Restaurants at the harbor and near the beach on the square in front of it serve Pomeranian home-style cooking, Italian cuisine and freshly caught fish. The range of cuisines gives you the opportunity to choose between regional dishes, Italian food and fish.
Local History and Getting There
The local history museum traces Karlshagen’s development through historical documents and information panels. Topics include the founding of the town and the beginnings of tourism. The church’s history can also be traced over time: it was built in 1912, completely destroyed during the turmoil of war, rebuilt in 1953 and later extensively renovated.
You can reach Karlshagen by train. From Zinnowitz, you can get to the Baltic seaside resort of Karlshagen directly with just one change.
