Hanshagen was first documented in 1248 as Johanneshaghen. The history of the place therefore reaches far back and is reflected in several documented stages of development.

History

In 1524, Hanshagen received permission to build a water mill. Historically, the village comprised a parish village, the separately located Hanshagen estate on the main road, and Fliederberg. Hanshagen was also historically connected with the former Eldena Monastery, Krummin Monastery, and the University of Greifswald.

In 1865, Hanshagen was recorded as having a church, two schools, factory buildings belonging to the mill, and farm buildings. These details portray a settlement whose local history was shaped by ecclesiastical, educational, agricultural, and mill-related structures.
