The lake shapes the character of Pyhäntä: the church village lies on the shore of Lake Pyhännänjärvi, and a cross-country ski trail also starts by the lake. Other highlights include a distinctive church, a local history museum and nature activities in the surrounding area. You can plan your trip around whether you are more interested in local history, outdoor activities or things to do on the water.

Church and local history

The church of Pyhäntä is a National Romantic, towered long church. It was built on the shore of Lake Pyhännänjärvi in 1907–1909. The altarpiece is also part of its story: entitled “Hyvä Paimen” (“The Good Shepherd”), it was painted by Kaarlo Metsävainio. Those interested in architecture and religious art will find distinctive details here that make the site special beyond its lakeside location.

The local history museum is near the church village on Kestiläntie. Its wide-ranging collection is dedicated to the history of the municipality. In summer, the museum is open at separately announced times; outside the summer season, visits can be arranged by appointment. The grounds are close to the shore of Lake Pyhännänjärvi, at Kestiläntie 6. When planning a museum visit, check the announced opening times or arrange an appointment outside the summer season.

Lakeshore and nature in the surrounding area

The bridge over Lake Pyhännänjärvi offers particularly beautiful views. If you would like to explore a nature area in addition to the lake by the church village, the Iso-Ahvenjärvi outdoor recreation area is located on the eastern edge of the municipality of Pyhäntä, about 24 km from the village centre. This peaceful wilderness area includes several clear-water lakes and is part of the Hellämönharju Natura area. The two locations offer different natural highlights: the shore of Lake Pyhännänjärvi in the village and the lake landscape of Iso-Ahvenjärvi beyond the village centre.

An 8 km nature trail runs through Iso-Ahvenjärvi. There are three lean-to shelters with campfire sites in the area; the trail and these rest stops are useful landmarks for anyone planning a longer stay in nature. The area is also suitable for mountain biking.

Activities on the water and in the village

At Ahvenjärvi, there is a barbecue shelter, a cabin, a toilet, a smoke sauna, accommodation buildings and a public swimming beach. These facilities complement the nature experiences with opportunities for swimming and spending time by the water. Museon Beach is a separate location, with a barbecue shelter and a beach volleyball court. Those who would like to include a sporting activity in their trip will also find two asphalt tennis courts at Seurantie 2c and a disc golf course at Koulutie 8 in Pyhäntä.

Winter activities are also tied to a specific location: a cross-country ski trail by Lake Pyhännänjärvi starts at the boat landing at Museon Beach. At the beach near the church village, the local association Pyhännän avantouimarit offers ice swimming to those interested. Together with the facilities at Ahvenjärvi and the activities at Museon Beach, there is a range of options for different interests in water and leisure activities, without conflating the locations or activities.
