Kuivaniemi reveals itself through coastal views, short nature trails and maritime history. Merihelmi offers sweeping views of the landscape towards the Bothnian Bay (Perämeri). Vatunki lies on the shore of this bay, at the outermost tip of the Vatunginnokka headland. The two places offer different coastal scenery: the expansive view at Merihelmi and the distinctive headland at Vatunki. When planning your trip, consider whether trails and sea views, wildlife watching or historic sites should be your focus.

Coastal Trails and Nature Experiences

The approximately 300-metre-long Sailor's Path is accessible and suitable for wheelchairs and strollers up to the hut. Signs along the path provide information about the surrounding marine environment. A bird tower offers sweeping sea views, and the path is lit at dusk. In summer 2026, the Sailor's Path was temporarily closed.

At approximately 500 metres, the Oolanni Nature Trail is longer than the Sailor's Path. Signs along the trail cover the area's nature and history. It ends at a monument to the Oolanni War, located on a rock by the seashore. At the end of the trail are a log cabin, a campfire site and a woodshed. While the Sailor's Path brings together the marine environment and sea views, Oolanni connects the trail with the landscape and a culture of remembrance.

Local History and Harbour Culture

The Kuivaniemi Local History Museum is housed in an old cooperative building. Its exhibits include old household items, local artefacts, tools and fishing equipment. This mix offers insights into different aspects of everyday life and fishing. Kuivaniemi Church is protected under the Church Act. Another memorial is the Finnish War memorial: it commemorates two non-commissioned officers and 30 to 40 soldiers who fell in the Finnish War and were buried at this site by the Finnish-Swedish army.

Vatunki also has a maritime aspect to its local character: fishing boats are a common sight in the harbour area. There is also a beach for swimming. This combination of coastal location, harbour and beach adds another dimension to a stay, alongside the trails and historic sites.

Paddling, Outdoor Activities and Birdlife

For canoe trips, the municipal canoeing map shows a route from Merihelmi via Pankinnokka, the Oolanni lean-to shelter and Vatunki fishing harbour to Ryöskärinkalla. Route conditions and map availability may change; check both before setting out. Kuivajoki in Kuivaniemi is a separate option: it is considered suitable for experienced paddlers and is characterised by currents and rocky sections.

In summer, mountain biking and jogging with a dog are permitted on the fitness trail at Kuivaniemi station. As seasonal conditions of use may change, check the current notices before setting out. Birdlife is also part of the area's natural character: Voosijärvi, near the village of Hyry in Kuivaniemi, is known as an area rich in birdlife.

Getting to Vatunki

Vatunki is accessible via the E4 and Pohjoisrannantie. It is about seven kilometres to the tip of the headland; the final stretch of road may have frost damage. This approximate distance and the possible condition of the final stretch offer practical guidance for the drive.
