Military History and Aviation
In 1927, the newly established Air Force flight school took over Ljungbyhed. The flight school developed into Krigsflygskolan F5; the school closed in 1998.
Before the flight school, military exercises shaped the open heath at Ljungbyhed: from the late 17th century, it served as a gathering and training ground for three regiments. The former camps for hussars, dragoons and infantry can still be distinguished. Among the surviving buildings are a camp hut dating from around 1870, officers’ barracks and stable buildings from the 1890s, as well as the flight school’s 1938 brick buildings. Since 1997, Ljungbyhed/F 5 has been designated a Swedish byggnadsminne, or listed building. As early as the 1910s, aviation pioneer Enoch Thulin had established a flight school on the heath.
The Ljungbyhed Military History Museum features exhibitions about the activities, equipment and settings of army units. The museum is housed in the former mess hall from the 1860s and in a barracks. An exhibition opened in 2016 is dedicated to the development of aviation in Ljungbyhed. As exhibition details may change, check them before your visit.
Nybodamm and Trails
Nybodamm is visited by grey herons, coots, goosanders and mallards, among other birds; occasionally, a pair of swans joins them.
The Nybodammslingan trail is just over three kilometres long, passes through mixed woodland and meadows, and starts at the car park by the outdoor swimming pool. The loop is lit and, according to the municipality, suitable for pushchairs. Spring flowers include wood anemones and lily of the valley; later, cow-wheat and marsh marigolds bloom. With a little luck, you may encounter roe deer, hares or a badger. About halfway along the trail is a shelter with a rest area.
